Acid Reflux

James was diagnosed this afternoon by Dr. Harsh with having Acid Reflux. He has been spitting up every bit of food that we give him for the last two days. When he spit up most of a bottle today at daycare, I decided it was time to call in the professionals. So, I called and described what was happening to the wonderful nurse. She told me she would speak to Dr. Harsh and call me back. She called back with in 5 minutes and told me Dr. Harsh wanted to see him ASAP. So, we made an appointment for 3:30 P.M. I left Dollywood and went to daycare to get him.

When we arrived they weighed him as usual...he weighs 14 lbs. 11 oz. Then we waited to see the doctor. Dr. Harsh asked what was going on, and as I described it he just kept shaking his head. At about that time James did his spitting up, so Dr. Harsh got to see what happens. Dr. Harsh determined after looking at him that he has Acid Reflux. So, we are back down to 4 oz. bottles with 2 teaspoons of cereal in each bottle. We are not to give him cereal in a bowl anymore until at least when we go back for his 4 month check up. He is also on Zanax liquid form every six hours. Hopefully, it will help. We will probably be feeding him more often with only 4 ounces at a time, but he said this would help his little belly to not get over full. We also have to lift the head of his bead up 6 inches, so he is not laying flat. And after he eats we have to keep him upright for at least 20 minutes regardless of if he is sound asleep.

New trials and tribulations. I'm just glad this is all it was. We will keep you posted.

You'll get through this, too. It's encouraging that Dr. Harsh was able to diagnose this without the 24-hour (in-hospital) test. But, I think, because James has been gaining weight fairly steadily, this is probably not a real severe case.

Welcome to parenthood. . . :)

Ah yes....acid reflux! Been there, done that with both of ours! If he is gaining, you are in a good place right now. With Caleb we never had him on meds, but switched to soy formula, and that helped. With Abbie, she was on meds for awhile, and then she got sick and put on antibiotics, so I took her off the other, and she was fine from then on and never went back on the meds. Sometimes they just grow out of it, and hopefully James will too. Prayin' for you guys!!
